Interested in TRYOUTS?
Frequently Asked Questions

Squash Haven offers tryouts for interested students every fall. During tryouts, students have the opportunity to try squash and to participate in academics.

What should we know about Squash Haven and tryouts?

  • Squash Haven is a FREE after-school program for 5th through 12th graders that continues to work with students individually through college and into career.
  • Approximately 30 new team members are selected every fall after a rigorous tryout process that includes academic and athletic tryouts at Yale as well as a written application, teacher recommendations, and family interviews.
  • Team members typically start in 5th grade and we add about 20 5th grade students each year. We do add students in additional grades based on the available number of openings.
  • Our primary selection variables are academic and athletic motivation and commitment. We also proactively seek team members from limited income families who will be the first in their family to graduate from college.
  • Please reach out to [email protected] for more information.

Why might your child benefit from trying out?

  • The tryout goes both ways! Students have the chance to learn if they like the sport and if they feel excited to be part of a program that will require commitment and hard work.
  • Squash Haven welcomes young people into a supportive, nurturing, and dedicated community of students and staff.
  • Squash Haven sticks by team members and their families for up to a 14 year commitment.
  • 79% of team members attend top 100 colleges and universities.
  • College team members receive over $2.1 million annually in financial aid scholarships and awards.
  • Approximately one third of team members play squash in college.

How much commitment is required if students join the team?

  • Team members attend a minimum three mandatory 3 hour sessions per week throughout the school year and a five-week summer camp.
  • Students are making a long-term commitment to Squash Haven and it is our hope that they participate through middle school, high school, and college.
  • Attendance is a priority! Team members are asked to maintain 90% attendance.
