Our StaffJulie Greenwood Executive Director Julie Greenwood comes to Squash Haven from Williams College (MA), where she served as Assistant Professor of Physical Education, Women’s Squash Coach (1997-2002), Women’s Tennis Coach, and Acting Senior Woman Administrator. Julie’s squash teams at Williams always ranked between sixth and ninth in the country (all divisions). Her tennis teams qualified for the women’s NCAA Division III championships every year, winning the first-ever back to back titles in 2001 and 2002. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Greenwood was a first-year academic advisor and oversaw NCAA Compliance and Championships hosting. In addition to her work with college students, Greenwood has a longstanding interest in and commitment to youth, education, and community outreach. She spent six summers leading outdoor trips (including two cross-country bike trips) for middle and high school students and is a former board member of the Greylock ABC (A Better Chance) program. In 2003, Greenwood became the community service outreach coordinator for the Williams athletic department and in that role helped establish community youth tennis and squash outreach programs, create an annual Christmas toy drive wrap party for youth, and facilitate a faculty lecture series for lifetime learners. Greenwood has also been a GED tutor for adults in North Adams, MA and more recently for former inmates in Brooklyn, NY as part of the Ready, Willing, and Able program. Greenwood is a 1996 Williams graduate in History and Psychology. As an athlete she was a two-time NCAA Division III national doubles champion (tennis) and a three-time All-American in both tennis and squash. She was also the recipient of the Purple Key Award, given annually to the outstanding graduating male and female athlete. She received her Masters in Education from Stanford in 2003. Christi Boscarino Elligers Christi Boscarino Elligers is Squash Haven’s first full time Academic and Community Service Director. Christi comes to Squash Haven after two years of experience as a Teach for America corps member at New Haven’s Roberto Clemente Leadership Academy. At Clemente, Christi taught 7th and 8th grade language arts and served on the school’s Curriculum, School Climate, and Pep Rally committees. Her time in the classroom was distinguished by unwavering high standards for student achievement and behavior, meticulous attention to planning and organization, and innovative approaches to curriculum development. Christi is a Windsor, CT native and is a 2006 graduate of Northwestern University, where she majored in French and Political Science. As a college student, Christi pursued her interests in youth and education; she worked as a tutor in both the French department and for America Reads, in an after-school literacy intervention program for middle school students. She also spent one semester studying in Paris. Christi will oversee and develop Squash Haven’s academic program with an emphasis on literacy, academic enrichment, student choice, and goal-setting. Jane Lewin Academic, Service, and Cultural Coordinator Jane Lewin is a New Haven native and has been a teacher in the New Haven public school system at Celentano for over thirty years. Jane brings a wealth of classroom and after school experience to Squash Haven. Jane’s training and expertise is in large measure focused on literacy and reading. She is trained as Teacher of English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) as well as in the Scholastic 180, Wilson, and Mondo Reading Programs, and has worked to individualize literacy program goals for 4th and 5th grade students at Celentano. Jane’s additional work in summer school and after school programs has been focused on expanding opportunities in both athletics and the arts. Jane worked with the Southern Connecticut Library Council to bring live theater to New Haven public school students and has also engaged students in their own theater productions through her Fairy Tale Snippets curriculum. In addition, she has worked with the Peabody Museum, British Art Museum, and the Historical Society to expand curricular opportunities in the arts. Jane is a past fundraising chair for local AAU and Wilbur Cross basketball teams; she received her BS and dual certification in Special Education with a minor in Elementary Education from Boston University in 1975. Jane received her Master’s in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State in 1982. John DeWitt John will take over the administration of all aspects of the squash program and will also be responsible for volunteer training, recruitment, and communication. Like all staff, John will be engaged in all aspects of programming. Renee Graham Renee attended Dartmouth College and has an MBA from Columbia Business School. A competitive skier in high school and college, Renee coached skiing in Hanover, New Hampshire and Stratton Mountain Vermont. She has enjoyed working in sports TV production, sports management and consulting, investment banking, and most recently secondary school admissions and consulting. Renee has 3 sons, all squash players, and three dogs. She lives in Darien, CT and is an ardent supporter of Urban Squash and their young scholar athletes. Nikki Hilgert Nikki is from Valdosta, Georgia and is a 2011 graduate of Mercer College, where she majored in Psychology with a minor in Education. At Mercer, Nikki was a Senior Resident Advisor, long-time volunteer for Big Brother Big Sisters of Macon, GA, co-director of the Up 'til Dawn Executive Board, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. At Squash Haven, Nikki will be responsible for helping to organize and administer weekday academic sessions for our lower school students in grades four through six. In addition, she will be responsible for daily study hall for grades 6-10 and for helping to coordinate monthly community service outings for the full 2011-12 team.
