Urban Squash PartnersThe National Urban Squash “Movement”Squash Haven is one of ten member programs in the National Urban Squash and Education Association, joining programs in Boston, Harlem, the Bronx, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Diego, Denver, Detroit, and Baltimore. All of the programs share a model where students would learn the game of squash in the context of a rigorous after school team environment that also emphasizes academic development, community service, and strong interpersonal and team values. The first member program, SquashBusters, was established in Boston in 1996. Since then, urban squash programs have helped students participate in summer opportunities including Outward Bound, foreign tours, and squash camps; attend college at a much higher rate (85%) than their peers (40-50%); and participate in educational partnerships with schools like Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Chicago. While each program is an individually managed and fundraised non-profit, NUSEA member programs share general programmatic goals in additional to standards in sixteen areas of operation including attendance/attrition, programming, budgeting, and strategic planning. Member programs come together twice a year in the National Urban Team and Individual Championships.
