Who We AreSquash Haven is an after-school enrichment program for New Haven youth. The program was formed in the spring of 2006. Partner schools were selected in the spring of 2007, tryouts and team selections took place in early summer, and our first season started in September 2007 at Yale’s Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The 70 fourth through tenth grade students who comprise our team attend partner schools East Rock, Edgewood, Fair Haven, John Martinez, John C. Daniels, Roberto Clemente, Truman, and Christopher Columbus. High Schoolers are spread out at various private, public, and charter schools around the New Haven area. Team members are selected on the basis of their attitude, effort, and performance after field trips for all students to Yale, parent/family open houses, and extensive academic and athletic tryouts. The Squash Haven family extends well beyond the immediate team members. Families, school principals and teachers, board members, and volunteers all contribute regularly to the strength of the team experience. In 2010-11, 92% of Squash Haven family members said the program helps "a lot" or "tons" with the following: organization skills, academic motivation, self-confidence, and making quality friendships
