What We DoMissionSquash Haven believes that a focused and disciplined approach to both academics and athletics, in a team environment, allows boys and girls the best chance to reach their full potential and, in doing so, enrich their lives. We provide motivated and committed New Haven students with training in competitive squash, academic support and enrichment, and assistance with high school placement. Squash Haven's first school year program began in September 2007. In 2011-12, our team will consist of 70 new and returning fourth through tenth grade students who are making noteworthy progress in the classroom, on the squash courts, in the community, and as a team. And we're having a whole lot of fun in the process.Program OverviewTeam members participate in Squash Haven activities three hours a day, three days a week throughout the school year. The squash program consists of oncourt practices at Yale in addition to team matches, tournaments, and fitness training. The Squash Haven academic program focuses on individualized homework help, academic enrichment, and preparation for the Connecticut Mastery Tests. Academic sessions are coordinated by Christi Elligers and Nikki Hilgert and staffed by Julie Greenwood, Jane Lewin, and volunteers. The Squash Haven community service program provides our students the opportunity to build community pride and involvement through a range of volunteer outings. Each Squash Haven team member participates in ten hours of community service per year. We are very excited about the opportunity to partner with Yale and committed New Haven public schools to jointly serve community youth. Our Academic Mission1) to support student academic performance at school and on standardized tests through individualized tutoring, goal-setting, and homework help 2) to enhance student classroom learning through daily differentiated enrichment and 4-6 week electives courses 3) to connect interested students to additional academic opportunities and resources outside of Squash Haven 4) to inspire team members to fully engage themselves in school and learning to become lifelong learners |
