WINTER 2010 UPDATESSQUASH HAVEN TAKES 2010 BY STORM! JANUARY BRINGS NATIONAL URBAN TEAM TITLES, NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST WINNER, AND OUR FIRST US SQUASH TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
In Squash Haven’s third appearance at the event, 26 team members were selected to represent us based on their effort and behavior in squash and academics. Hopes were high that the past year’s hard work would enable us to better our second place finishes in the Boys and Girls U13 in 2009. We would also test the waters in the 15s by entering teams for the first time. Squash Haven’s rising stars did not disappoint; they exceeded all expectations by winning the Boys and Girls Under 13s Championships as well as the Boys U15. The closest title chase came in the Boys U15, where Squash Haven prevailed in tight matches in both the semis and finals, beating MetroSquash 3-2 in the semis and Squash Busters 3-2 in the finals. In the U13s finals, both Squash Haven squads faced off against City Squash in rematches of last year’s finals. This time, however, Squash Haven reversed the outcomes with a 5-0 win in the girls final and a 4-1 win in the boys final. Next up: Our first appearance at the US Squash Middle School Championships at Yale January 30th and 31st! BREVARD WINS NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST ON ADVERSITYNot to be outdone by Squash Haven’s stellar squash presence at the Nationals, our academic program also enjoyed some time in the spotlight. Edgewood School seventh grader was honored at a ceremony for all urban squash players as the National Essay Contest Winner in the Under 13s. Aaron’s essay on adversity, which he worked on and edited over the month leading up to the trip to Boston, was selected as the best essay for all Under 13s participants. Way to go Aaron! GONZALEZ WINS GREENWICH BRONZEIn the first weekend in January, five Squash Haveners made the trip to Greenwich to compete in the Greenwich Bronze tournament. Unseeded second year team member Javier Gonzalez came away with the title, winning five matches over two days and a hard fought five game final. His victory was Squash Haven’s first in a US Squash tournament. SQUASH HAVEN RETURNS TO CHOATE FOR SECOND ANNUAL CLINIC WITH TEAMS
Squash Haven got back in the swing of things after the holiday with a field trip
for all 50 team members to Choate Rosemary Hall. Choate’s boys’ and girls’ varsity
teams hosted our students for squash clinics and dinner in the dining hall. The
day was coordinated by Choate junior Matt Sheridan, who has spearheaded the event,
and support by all of the members of the varsity teams.
