March 2009 Academic  Awards

Academic Awards Dinner, March 24: On Tuesday March, 24th, Squash Haven held its first official academic awards dinner to honor the 21 team members who made second marking period honor roll.  Also invited to the dinner were eight team members who were recognized for outstanding effort and achievement in our Martin Luther King essay contest. 

John S. Martinez Awards Ceremony, March 26 and March 27: 17 of our John S Martinez Students were honored at a winter academics assembly on Thursday and Friday, 3/26 and 3/27.  Students of the month included: Deni Cifuentes (7th), John Duluc (7th), Alanis Perez (6th), Lessly Portillo (6th), and Alexis Ramirez (7th).  All students receiving honors in second marking period were also acknowledged.

February 2009

Team Members Selected for Summer Academic Opportunities, February 28: 13 Squash Haven students (over a third of our team!!!) have been accepted into local six week summer academic programs.  4 seventh grade students will participate in the Breakthrough collaborative at Hopkins School as part of a two year commitment, and 9 sixth and seventh grade students will participate in Ulysses s Grant at Yale. 

Team Members do overnight homestays with Pine Cobble School (Williamstown, MA, February 20): 12 Squash Haven team members traveled to Massachusetts during their February break.  Students practiced at Williams College and did a tour of the campus before meeting up with host students and families from the Pine Cobble School.  The following day, team members faced off in a competitive but very friendly match with their hosts.  

January 2009

Choate Field Trip and Clinic, January 23: All team members traveled to Choate Rosemary Hall for an afternoon of fun and squash with the Coate boys’ and girls’ teams.   Choate sophomore Matthew Sheridan spearheaded the event, which included a campus tour, clinics with both the boys’ and giils’ varsity teams, and a dinner with new friends in the dining hall. 

Boys and Girls U13 NUSEA Team Nationals Runners-up, January 19: 18 team members traveled to Harlem to compete in the National Urban Squash and Education Association Team Championships.  Two boys’ teams came away with second and sixth places (out of 11) in the U13 competition, and the lone girls’ team also came in second.  Both finalists came up short to City Squash (the Bronx) in the finals.
