Squash Haven NewsSquash Summer Camp for Squash HavenJuly 2008: Squash Haven summer campers started the camp season off with a bang. Seven students were in squash camps the first week of July and two brought home more than just improved games. Alex Andino was named Camper of the Week at NUSEA's SquashBusters Discovery Camp, and Derek Lawrence was named Most Improved Player at Ultimate Squash Camp at Yale. Squash Haven celebrates 1st BirthdayJune 2008 - On Wednesday evening 6/18 Squash Haven celebrated its first birthday! The night began at the squash courts, where families played and mingled in the midst of hip hop dance lessons and a raffle. The formal ceremony took place over dinner, where 100 team members, families, staff, and volunteers came together to celebrate. Each individual student was acknowledged for his/her contributions to the program this year and was awarded a certificate and Squash Haven t-shirt proclaiming “We are the Future.” Squash Haven Wraps First Year at NUSEA Urban Individuals (Williamstown, MA)June 2008 - Sixteen players represented Squash Haven at its first NUSEA Urban Individual tournament, held 6/13-6/15 at Williams College. The whole crew stayed in the Williams dorms and spent the weekend duking it out at the squash courts. On the squash courts, Derek Lawrence advanced to the quarterfinals of the Boys U13 Championship, and Erick Soto and Michael Berrios each advanced to the quarterfinals of the BU13 Consolation. Deni Cifuentes was honored at Saturday’s awards ceremony as the progam’s nominee for the Urban Squash Award. Squash Haven's Executive Director said of Deni “Deni is independent, hard-working, passionate, unselfish, kind, and able to work with her teammates. She is quietly strong and independent and represents all of the values we strive to teach on a daily basis.” Look out next year! Squash Haven teammates cook Breakfast for DinnerJune 2008 - On 6/4 and 6/10, ten Squash Haven team members enjoyed breakfast for dinner. Students qualified for the event by reading a book and writing a typed, error-free letter to their teammates reviewing the book. Students also had to write five vocabulary words in order to qualify. Isabel Courtelis was awarded the prize for best overall reader and Michael Berrios was acknowledged for having written the best letter. News Archive
